Press Release, 03/10/2010Brandenburg cycle rally to converge on IBA LusatiaCycling season starts on 24 April in South Brandenburg / Four tours leaving from Cottbus, Lübben, Senftenberg and Finsterwalde and converging on Großräschen for grand opening of IBA finale
No doubt, Herrmann Fürst von Pückler-Muskau would have wanted to climb down from his steed onto his bicycle in order to open the 2010 cycling season. Indeed, this year the traditional cycle rally will take place in the south of Brandenburg, departing from various points in a star formation and converging on one point. The point in question will be Großräschen, the pilot area for the Internationale Bauausstellung (IBA) Fürst-Pückler-Land. Covering some 200 kilometres, the cyclists will ride past seven IBA projects in total, some of them on the Fürst-Pückler cycle path. The destination of all the tours will be the Allee der Steine stone-lined boulevard and the IBA Terraces visitor centre on the emerging Lake Ilse in the Lusatian Lakeland. The official opening of the IBA finale will take place there in the afternoon in a spectacular setting in the former open-cast mine.
In 2010 we will be presenting the 30 projects in which we have been engaged in structural change and the transformation of the landscape. The statewide cycle rally ‘Brandenburg radelt an’ is a good opportunity to get to know the IBA projects and to attend our big opening event, said IBA Director Rolf Kuhn. People from Brandenburg and Berlin, and cycling enthusiasts from the surrounding area and Saxony are very welcome. The four tours depart between 9:00 and 10:00 hrs. from Cottbus, Lübben, Senftenberg and Finsterwalde. Tour participants will have a close-up view of the landscape transformation and gain insight into the cultural and industrial history of Lusatia. IBA projects encountered along the way will include the landmark viewing tower, floating houses, the showground building site on the canal to Lake Senftenberg, Raddusch Slavic Fort, Pritzen heritage landscape, and the F60 visitor mine.
There will be a welcome reception for the cyclists in Großräschen at about 14:00 hrs., attended by the mayor and the IBA Director. Time will be allowed for a breather and to have a go on the tombola before the launch event starts. The IBA finale will start at 15:30 hrs. with Minister-President Matthias Platzeck as patron and with contributions from the Paradise 2 art project in which many Lusatians have collaborated. Admission to the arena on the bed of Lake Ilse is free. Some 1,500 visitors are expected to attend the production "Paradise 2" starts here - a lake symphony. Afterwards visitors can visit the exhibition The Reconquering of a Landscape and take a tour of the open-cast mine. Artistic performances will be staged on the IBA Terraces well into the evening.
The "Brandenburg radelt an" cycle rally is being organised by the Elbe-Elster, Dahme-Spreewald, Oberspreewald-Lausitz and Spree-Neiße district authorities and the town councils of Cottbus und Großräschen in cooperation with tourism company TMB Tourismus Marketing Brandenburg GmbH and the IBA.
