(1) 3, 2, 1 ... IBA finale! Bed of lake became centre stage

Last weekend the IBA presentation year was opend with Minister-President and patron Matthias Platzeck. The "Brandenburg radelt an" statewide cycle rally let to the lake town. 400 riders joined this guided cycle rally, departing from Cottbus, Lübben, Finsterwalde and Senftenberg. In the afternoon the big "Lake Symphony" began in the former Meuro open-cast mine. Accompanied by a 320-stong choir the 3.000 visitors were adjourn to the arena on the bed of the future lake. Minister-President and IBA Director Rolf Kuhn declared the IBA finale in the presence of guests from the world of politics, trade and industry, IBA partners, supporters and many visitors. The musical composition of Peter Apelt was the first production in the Paradise 2 art project which has been developed by Swiss artist Jürg Montalta. After the opening ceremony the guests went on the "Trip to Mars" and to jeep safaris. Afterwards the final exhibition "The Reconquering of a Landscape" was opened on the IBA Terraces. ill october it informs about the work of the IBA. More information

(2) Exhibition "The Reconquering of a Landscape" has open its doors

The new IBA exhibition "The Reconquering of a Landscape" puts an ambivalent process in its historical and cultural context: For decades the Lusatian people have made their living from the lignite, therefore the massive decline in mining after the political reforms of 1989/90 led to far-reaching social shifts. From another perspective the open-cast mines bring large-scale destruction to the countryside, and the closure of the pits in turn presents an opportunity to reconstruct entire landscapes. The first planning sessions by Lake Ilse birthed the idea of involving an IBA which would come alongside the transformation process in Lusatia in Brandenburg with professional insight and planning input. Ten milestones in the work over the entire past ten years are used in the exhibition to illustrate how this tiny acorn of an idea grew into a mighty tree of an institution, the working methods the IBA adopted, how the 30 IBA projects were developed and the results they achieved. Starting on Terrace 1, there will be a 19 x 9-metre model of the lake showing the navigable network of lakes at the heart of the Lusatian Lakeland and reproducing the scenery in miniature. Information will be available in the visitor centre about the "Paradise 2" art project. Ten IBA milestones lead the way to the presentation of the 30 IBA projects in the exhibition building. A deckchair awaits in the café or at the beach bar for a relaxing end to the tour of the exhibition. The exhibition is free of charge and will be open from 10:00 to 18:00 hrs. from Tuesday to Sunday.

(3) IBA catalogue to document entire IBA process and all 30 IBA projects

The new German-English catalogue "Lusatia: New Landscape" has over 300 pages covering the ten years in which the IBA has shadowed the structural transformation of the land which had become necessary in Lusatia after the mining in the region. Seven main themes highlight the challenges which faced the IBA. The catalogue documents how the initial planning meetings in the south of Großräschen spawned the idea of having an IBA in Lusatia and how it became an institution capable of meeting the challenges, as well as explaining its philosophy, approach, communication strategies and ideas for tourism. It goes into detail on the background to the 30 IBA projects, explaining how they came about, how they were run and what results they achieved, and sets the IBA in the context of the 100-year tradition of International Building Exhibitions in Germany. Packed with colour illustrations, the catalogue (ISBN 978-3-86859-042-5) is a Jovis-Verlag publication and is available at the IBA Terraces, in the IBA online shop and in book shops for 19.80 euros.

(4) Document looks back at IBA conference and reports on mining regions all over the world

Another Jovis-Verlag publication, the German-English documentation entitled "Post-Mining Landscape" makes reference to the international IBA conference held in the autumn of 2009 on the management of post-mining landscapes all over the world. Experts from every continent reported on the potential problems and opportunities which can arise when designing the new post-mining landscape. The publication features reports from Europe (France, Great Britain, Portugal, Czech Republic), the USA, Chile, South Africa and China. The conference documentation covers 240 pages giving extensive insight into current thinking on the subject from a theoretical and practical viewpoint. The work also makes reference to the ten theses on dealing with post-mining landscapes which were unpacked and developed at the conference and which constitute the legacy of the IBA in terms of theory. For 19.80 euros you can buy a copy of the documentation (ISBN 978-3-86859-043-2) in the visitor centre on the IBA Terraces, in the IBA online shop or in book shops.

(5) Facelift for IBA website featuring promotional video about Lusatia

A new website has been developed for the IBA in the last few weeks in conjunction with the Faculty of Design at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences and the Büro Beyrow consultancy office. The website has been online for a few days, featuring up-to-date information about the projects and highlights in the presentation year. Attention-grabbing photographs and occasional video clips bring the IBA projects to life. Visitors to the site can also watch the promotional IBA video directed by Thomas Uhlmann and Anja Freyhoff. With fast-moving footage and strong visuals, the aim of the film is to inform viewers about the work of the IBA and whet their appetite to take a trip to Lusatia.

(6) Paradise 2 art project to pursue the question "What is energy?"

The Welzow-Süd open-cast mine extends for a stretch of about 40 kilometres. Electricity is produced for the east of Germany with the coal mined here and the countryside is thus "consumed" on a grand scale. The view from the edge of the pit shows what impact it has on the town and the local people when a light is switched on in a living room in Berlin. Here, in the town by the open-cast mine, Italian artist Tommaso Lana has developed two scenic tours through biographies and mining landscapes. For decades the people of Lusatia have made their living from the lignite and have witnessed their countryside being destroyed. The massive decline in lignite mining after the political reforms following German reunification led, in turn, to far-reaching social shifts. It takes human energy on a vast scale to cope with all these upheavals and transformation processes. An exciting journey is therefore in store for visitors to Tommaso Lana's contribution to the Paradise 2 art project. The people of Welzow themselves will talk about how they have coped, the sources from which they draw their energy for life, and the ideas they are developing for the future. The premiere will be held on 1 May at 15:00 hrs. The event will be held at the old railway station in Welzow (Alter Bahnhof Welzow, Heinrich-Heine-Straße 2). Tickets cost € 18.00, or € 8.00 with concessions, and can be purchased online or in the IBA Terraces visitor centre. More Information

(7) Concert in church ruins to build bridges from Poland to Germany

Paradise 2 goes to the town of Guben/Gubin on the Germany-Poland border on 8 and 9 May. The scars left by the Second World War are still perceptible here. A Polish foundation, a German development association, the town councils and the IBA have been working on the reconstruction and restoration of the parish church here since 2005. This deeply symbolic site is earmarked for the construction of a German-Polish and European meeting centre in the next few years. As part of the Paradise 2 project, Jürg Montalta organised "listening circles" here which are essentially meetings where Poles and Germans tell each other their life stories and listen to each other. On the basis of these moving accounts, four Polish and four German organists have selected musical compositions for a 24-hour recital due to be held on an organ in the church ruins 65 years on from the end of the War. The first public concert since the church was destroyed in 1945 will begin at 16:00 hrs. and will last until the next day. It is the climax of a social pilot scheme aimed at understanding the "internalised landscapes" of people from other countries who were once enemies. Admission is free. More information

(8) IBA puts on exhibition in Dresden Chamber of Architects

The Chamber of Architects and the Werkbund Sachsen are inviting people to the Haus der Architekten in Dresden on 6 May for the opening of the IBA touring exhibition at 18:30 hrs.
