Presentation of Prof. David Robertson

In the book »Hard as the Rock Itself: Place and Identity in the American Mining Town«, geographer David Robertson explores connections to place among residents of three former mining communities in the central U.S. Serving as the focus of this presentation, are the ways that resident identity is tied to the mining past and its landscape legacies. Post-mining landscapes, even those posing serious threats to environmental quality, can function as key signifiers of local identity. This work sheds light on the nature of America’s historic mining landscapes and the challenges faced by those charged with addressing their myriad problems.
